Corinth travel guide

Corinth is a modern city with the archaeological site of ancient Corinth a few kilometers away on and around the Acrocorinth, a precipitous rock with fortifications that dominates the landscape. Earthquakes have reduced much of the remains to foundations but the Temple of Apollo still has columns standing. On top of the Acrocorinth are the remains of the Temple of Aphrodite. There is also an Agora, Theatre Askepieion and fountain. The Archaeological Museum of Ancient Corinth has a collection of antiquities including Neolithic finds and Teracotta figures from the Asclepieion.

Corinth Canal Wikipedia

On your way to or from Corinth you can get a good view of the Corinth Canal. Completed in 1893 and 6.3km long, it was considered a major engineering achievement at that time. It cuts through the isthmus of Corinth separating the Peloponnese from the mainland, effectively making the Peloponnese an island. Its easy to find, just off the toll road from Athens (take exit for Epidaurus) and right next to the Corinth inter-city bus station a few kilometers out of town. There are several cafes and Souvlaki restaurants next to the road bridge over the canal which makes it a useful stopping place being about an hour’s drive from Athens airport.
