Exploring the Area
A few kilometers up the coast is Gialova, a small tourist resort which has some good cafes, restaurants and a beach with trees at the back that are good for shade.
Gialova is on Navarino bay where there was a famous naval battle in 1827 that was a decisive moment in Greece war of independence against the Turks. See Wikipedia for a full account
A little further along the coast is bay of Voidokilla, a glorious circle of sand backed by dunes marred by piles of trash left by people camping overnight. Behind the dunes is the Gialova lagoon, a protected area of saltwater wetlands with a large bird population and unique wildlife. See Surfbirds
There has been a lot of tourist development in recent years - new apartments and villas built along the coast to Gialova and a big hotel and golf course complex outside Pylos. All of which has made the area much busier and commercialised in recent years.
